Tarkwa Bay Beach Lagos (2026): Boat Fares, Jetties, Surfing and Safety

Boat arriving at Tarkwa Bay Beach in Lagos with the breakwall behind

There is no road to Tarkwa Bay. Every visitor crosses the harbour in a small boat, and that crossing is where most of the questions and most of the risk sit: which jetty to use, what the boatman will charge, whether there will be a life jacket for you, and how you get back before dark. The sand itself is the easy part.

For Tarkwa Bay Beach, Lagos, Nigeria, the useful questions are practical ones, and most published answers disagree with each other. Below you will find where the beach sits, the jetties people use, the fares and fees that travel writing reports, the surf and the walk to Lighthouse Beach, the rules on the water, and what Lagos State has said it plans for the place.

Where Tarkwa Bay Beach, Lagos, Sits and Why the Water Is Calm

The Tarkwa Bay Beach Lagos location is an artificial, sheltered beach near the mouth of Lagos harbour, across the water from Victoria Island. A long breakwall runs along the harbour entrance, and the surf on the inner side loses most of its force against it. That is why families choose it when the open-ocean beaches on the Lekki side feel too rough. Our guide to beaches in Lagos and their entrance fees compares those drive-in beaches with this one.

On the other side of the same breakwall is Lighthouse Beach, which takes the full Atlantic swell. Surfer’s reporting on the area describes rips there that occasionally pull swimmers out to sea. Keep the two apart in your head: the bay side is for paddling and floating, and Lighthouse Beach is for looking.

Lagos State’s tourism commissioner, Toke Benson-Awoyinka, described Tarkwa Bay in September 2025 as a calm, attractive setting that is safe and suitable for families. The same announcement listed lifeguards as a planned improvement, so do not assume one is on duty when you get there.

Which Tarkwa Bay Jetty Should You Use?

Boats to Tarkwa Bay Beach, Lagos, leave from several points, and operators come and go. There is no street address for the beach, so the Tarkwa Bay Beach Lagos address that works is the jetty itself. Put it into your map app, not “Tarkwa Bay”, or the app will try to route you to a place you cannot reach by car.

CMS and Marina, Lagos Island

This is the busiest departure point and the one most travel write-ups quote first. Shared boats usually leave when they are full, and the crossing takes roughly 15 to 20 minutes. If you are coming from the mainland by rail, our Lagos Blue Line train guide covers the stations, fares and Cowry card. Settle the price and the return arrangement before you step into a boat.

Mekwe Jetty, Near Bonny Camp

Travel accounts describe this as the shortest crossing, 15 minutes or less. It suits you if you are starting around Bonny Camp and want the least time on the water.

Tarzan Jetty, Beside Lagos Oriental Hotel

Tarzan Jetty is on the Victoria Island side, with a crossing of about 25 minutes. It is the handiest option from Victoria Island and the Lekki end of the Island.

Fiki Marina, Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue

Fiki Marina is under the Falomo Bridge on the Ikoyi and Victoria Island side. Ask whether you are boarding a shared speedboat or a larger catamaran, because the price differs. Operators change, so check that a boat is running to Tarkwa Bay from your chosen jetty before you leave home.

What the Tarkwa Bay Boat Fare Really Costs

There is no official fare board for the crossing to Tarkwa Bay Beach, Lagos, which is why published figures disagree. A Lagos travel site reported public boats at ₦1,500 to ₦3,000 per person, and The Lagos Weekender reported ₦2,500 to ₦5,000 per person for the round trip from CMS, Fiki Marina or Tarzan Jetty. Some blog posts quote ₦1,000 to ₦1,500 return, which is the cheapest end of what anyone reports.

Treat these as rough ranges:

  • Shared public boat from an Island jetty: roughly ₦1,500 to ₦5,000 per person for the return trip
  • Larger or more organised boats from Fiki Marina: expect to pay more than a shared speedboat, and ask for the exact amount
  • Private speedboat or yacht for a group: from about ₦150,000 per boat, according to one Lagos travel site

Before you board, ask three questions. Is the price per person or per boat? Does it cover the return leg? And can you have the boatman’s phone number so you can call for your pickup? Fares move with fuel prices, so confirm the live price at the jetty.

Tarkwa Bay Entrance Fee, Chairs and Shade

The Tarkwa Bay entrance fee is a community charge collected when you land, and there is no official price list. Travel blogs disagree, quoting anything from ₦200 to ₦2,000 per person. Ask what the amount covers before you pay, and pay only that.

Shade costs extra. Chairs, tables, tents and speakers are rented on the sand, and one Lagos travel site puts tent and chair hire at about ₦2,000 to ₦5,000. Agree the price before you sit down, not while you are packing up.

Take cash in small notes. The Lagos Weekender warns that vendors may not accept transfers and that card machines can fail when the network is weak.

The Tarkwa Bay Beach Lagos price of a day out is a sum of parts: a couple on a shared boat could spend ₦6,000 to ₦10,000 on the return crossing, up to ₦4,000 on landing fees and ₦2,000 to ₦5,000 on shade. That is roughly ₦8,000 to ₦19,000 before food and drinks. Treat it as a ceiling to check against live quotes, not a price list.

Tarkwa Bay Surfing and the Walk to Lighthouse Beach

Tarkwa Bay surfing has a small but real scene, and it is one of the reasons people choose Tarkwa Bay Beach, Lagos, over a drive-in beach. Godpower Tamarakuro Pekipuma runs a surf school there and has coached local children for free. If you want a lesson, contact the school ahead of time rather than hoping to find an instructor on the beach. Lesson prices are not published, so ask when you book.

Surfer describes two breaks on either side of the breakwall. Inside the bay is a right-hand wedge that breaks close to shore and is consistent when the swell is up. The left at Lighthouse Beach takes the full swell and is the heavier of the two. The waves need the harmattan, the dry wind that blows for a few months of the year, to groom them. Beginners belong on the bay side, in the white water close to the sand.

Lighthouse Beach is reached on foot along a rocky shore from the main stretch. It has few vendors, so carry water. Wear shoes that grip, go in a group, ask locals how long the walk takes and set a turn-back time that leaves room to catch the last boat. Swim there only if you are an experienced ocean swimmer, and even then keep out of the rips.

Life Jackets, Daylight and the Last Boat

Most trips to Tarkwa Bay Beach, Lagos, pass without trouble, and the risks that do exist are mostly on the water. In January 2026, the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) restated that night-time travel on Lagos inland waterways is prohibited. Its general manager, Damilola Emmanuel, said commercial and private boat operations are limited to daylight and that operators must make sure all passengers wear life jackets at all times. Offenders face legal consequences.

Those rules are not abstract. In December 2020, the Guardian reported that a boat carrying passengers capsized in the Tarkwa Bay area at about 8:10pm after a heavy wave from another boat. The Navy rescued the passengers and blamed an unprofessional boat driver. Make these your own rules:

  • Refuse any boat that cannot give every passenger a life jacket, and wear it for the whole crossing.
  • Count seats against passengers and wait for the next boat if it is crowded.
  • Be at the landing by about 5pm, because blogs report that the last boat leaves the island around 6pm.
  • Postpone if the water looks choppy. Rough water is likelier in the rainy months, roughly April to September, and some boatmen cancel then.

On the sand, stay on the sheltered side and keep children within arm’s reach. Calm does not mean risk free, and nobody should be in the water after drinking. Naval personnel are stationed on the island, and the Navy had set up a forward operating base there by December 2020, so expect uniformed officers and follow their instructions.

The Community Behind Tarkwa Bay Beach, Lagos, and What the State Plans

Tarkwa Bay, Lagos, is not only a weekend playground. It is also home to a fishing and trading community, and its members run many of the stalls and huts. In January 2020, a joint task force carried out an eviction of residents, on an island ThisDay reported to be home to about 10,000 people. The Navy cited pipeline vandalism and crude oil theft, a court granted an interim injunction against further demolitions, and the Lagos State government said licensed leisure centres were not affected.

In September 2025, the state government pledged to upgrade the beach. Officials said they wanted to replace informal banana boats with safer ferries, bring electricity and add lifeguards, though the reports gave no dates. Until a service you can verify exists, the small boats remain the way across. Spend your money with local vendors, ask before photographing people and take your rubbish back with you.
