Ilorin sits roughly 300 km north of Lagos, and almost every bus gets there on two roads: the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway as far as Ibadan, then the old trunk road north through Oyo and Ogbomoso. On a clear run that takes four to five hours. With a slow exit from Lagos and roadworks near Oyo, it can stretch past six.
Few of the big coach companies treat Ilorin as a main destination, so the Lagos to Ilorin bus price is mostly set at the motor parks rather than on booking websites. The figures below are approximate and move with petrol prices and the season, so agree the fare at the park before your bag goes in the boot.
The Road North, Stage by Stage
Lagos to Ibadan
Buses leave from parks such as Ojota and Iyana-Ipaja and pick up the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway near Berger. The expressway runs 127.6 km to Ibadan and was rebuilt in two sections from 2013, with Julius Berger handling Lagos to the Shagamu Interchange and RCC the stretch on to Ibadan. You pass Magboro, Ibafo, Mowe and Redemption Camp before the interchange, then open road past Ogere to the Ibadan toll gate. The federal government has ordered failed sections on the Ibadan end rebuilt in concrete, so expect patches of roadwork.
Ibadan to Oyo
Most Ilorin buses skirt central Ibadan and head north past Ojoo and Moniya on the Oyo road. This is the weakest part of the Ibadan to Ilorin road: an Oyo pressure group has complained publicly about the delays, crashes and higher transport costs on it. The state-built Ibadan to Iseyin road has taken some traffic off it, and the 76.76 km Adebayo Alao-Akala Memorial Expressway, commissioned in May 2024, links Iseyin to Ogbomoso, giving drivers a way to bypass Oyo.
Oyo to Ogbomoso
This 52 km stretch has been a dual carriageway project for years. In 2025 the federal government replaced the original contractor, RCC, with JRB Construction and gave it 18 months to finish the remaining 36 km. Expect diversions where work continues. Oyo, with the Alaafin’s palace and Ajayi Crowther University, and Ogbomoso, home of LAUTECH, are the main towns where buses drop and pick up passengers along the way.
Ogbomoso to Ilorin
The last stretch crosses into Kwara State on a road that is still largely single carriageway and busy with trucks running between the North and Lagos. The federal government has approved ₦276 billion to dualise the Ilorin-Ogbomoso road, but until that work is finished, overtaking on this section is the biggest risk of the trip.
Lagos to Ilorin Distance and Time by Stage
| Stage | Approximate distance | Usual time by bus |
|---|---|---|
| Lagos (Ojota) to Ibadan | 130 km | 2 to 3 hours |
| Ibadan to Oyo | 50 km | 45 to 75 minutes |
| Oyo to Ogbomoso | 52 km | 45 to 60 minutes |
| Ogbomoso to Ilorin | 55 km | 45 to 60 minutes |
| Whole trip | about 300 km | 4 to 6 hours |
The Lagos to Ilorin distance barely changes between parks; the time does. A bus that clears Ojota before 6 a.m. can reach Ibadan in two hours, while an 8 a.m. weekday departure can lose an extra hour before Berger.
Lagos to Ilorin Bus Price at the Parks
Park buses and shared cars carry most passengers on this road. A seat in a park bus usually costs around ₦10,000 to ₦15,000 on an ordinary day, a seat in a shared car a few thousand naira more, and the front seat beside the driver is the dearest. Those ranges are approximate; the Lagos to Ilorin bus price at any park moves whenever petrol does.
For a sense of how fast fares rise, Ilorin parks were charging ₦6,000 to ₦7,000 for a Lagos bus seat in early 2024. At school resumption, one University of Ilorin student said she was asked ₦20,000 at a Lagos park, so the Lagos to Ilorin bus price on a peak weekend can be well above the ordinary range.
Hiring a car with a driver costs many times the Lagos to Ilorin bus price for one seat. If you do, agree whether fuel and the driver’s return journey are included before you set off.
Ilorin Motor Parks in Lagos
You will not find a single Ilorin terminal in Lagos. These are the loading points most passengers use.
Ojota
A major park for Ilorin, Ogbomoso and Oyo on the Ikorodu Road side, close to where the expressway begins.
Iyana-Ipaja
On the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway side, convenient for Alimosho, Egbeda, Ikotun and Abule Egba.
Berger
A roadside pickup point at the start of the expressway, where Ibadan and Ilorin buses top up empty seats. Quick, but agree the Lagos to Ilorin bus price and look at the vehicle before you get in.
Oshodi
The Oshodi interchange also loads interstate buses for the South-West and North, handy if you are coming from the airport side of Lagos.
At any of these Ilorin motor parks, pay only at the union desk or to the driver of the bus you are boarding, and keep the ticket or receipt.
Coach Companies, CNG Buses and Kwara Express
The branded options are thinner than on eastern routes. Peace Mass Transit includes Ilorin among the destinations in its route search, although its terminals page lists no Ilorin office; check the boarding point in our Peace Mass Transit price list before paying. Coaches heading for Abuja or Kano through the western corridor also pass through Ilorin, so ask whether they will sell a seat that far and what they charge.
Kwara Express, the state-owned line run by Harmony Transport Services and once a fixture on this road, was shut in November 2024 for an overhaul, with no reopening date given. Kwara State has since put federally supplied CNG buses on routes that include Ilorin to Lagos, which could pull the Lagos to Ilorin bus price down. Ask at the parks in Ilorin whether one is running on your date.
Arriving in Ilorin
Park buses from Lagos usually finish at Ilorin’s main loading areas, such as Geri-Alimi and Sawmill, which also load for the return trip. From there a taxi or keke will take you on into town, to the University of Ilorin or to your hotel.
If you are staying a night or two, our list of hotels in Ilorin, Kwara State covers options near the city centre. Plan to arrive in daylight, so you are not hunting for a ride at night.
Weekends When Seats Run Short
- Sallah: Ilorin is the seat of an emirate, and Eid brings large numbers of Kwara indigenes home from Lagos. Book or reach the park early on the days before.
- University resumption: University of Ilorin and Kwara State University students fill buses at the start of each session.
- Christmas, New Year and Easter: the usual festive surge, when the Lagos to Ilorin bus price rises at every park.
- Redemption Camp programmes: the Holy Ghost Service on the first Friday of each month, and the long annual convention in August, can jam the expressway around the camp.
Staying Safe Between Ibadan and Ilorin
Two crashes show the main danger on this road: overtaking. In October 2023 an Abuja-bound 16-seater that had just left Owode park in Oyo hit an articulated truck while overtaking it, and 15 people died. Earlier, in December 2019, a head-on crash on the old Ogbomoso-Ilorin road killed five.
- Travel by day. Leave Lagos early enough to reach Ilorin before dark.
- Choose a calm driver. If one bus at the park is famous for speed, wait for the next.
- Wear the belt if your seat has one, and speak up early if the driver keeps overtaking on bends.
- Carry water and a snack. There are long stretches between towns, especially north of Oyo.
Is a Lagos to Ilorin Flight Worth It?
Ilorin’s airport, General Tunde Idiagbon International Airport, is south-west of the city centre. Overland Airways flies from Lagos’s domestic Terminal 1 early in the morning, United Nigeria Airlines added Ilorin flights from MMA2 in late 2025, and Green Africa Airways also serves the route, with an evening flight from Ilorin back to Lagos. The flight takes 50 minutes to an hour.
The catch is price. One-way fares usually start somewhere above ₦100,000, several times the Lagos to Ilorin bus price. Flying makes sense for a short business trip or when you value the five hours. Our Overland Airways guide covers its Ilorin schedule and booking.
Lagos to Ilorin by Train: What Actually Runs
There is no direct passenger train. The old narrow gauge Lagos-Kano line does pass through Ilorin station, and when it last ran regularly it was a slow weekly service from Iddo. Floods and track damage have interrupted it repeatedly, and in July 2025 the Nigerian Railway Corporation said restored trains would reach Offa first, with Ilorin to follow later and no date given. Festive specials on the narrow gauge, sponsored by Osun State, have run only between Iddo and Osogbo. Our Lagos to Kano train guide has the line’s history and stations.
The realistic rail option is half train, half road. The Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge runs from Mobolaji Johnson Station in Ebute Metta to Obafemi Awolowo Station at Moniya, about two and a half hours. Moniya sits on Ibadan’s northern edge on the Oyo road, so you can continue roughly 150 km to Ilorin by road from there. Check the timetable and fares in our Lagos to Ibadan train guide; a morning train gets you to Ilorin by mid-afternoon.
