Owerri’s airport is not in Owerri. Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport sits in Ngor Okpala Local Government Area, about 25 km south-east of the city centre, so every trip from Lagos ends with a drive up the airport road before you reach Ikenegbu, New Owerri or the family compound.
The Lagos to Owerri flight price swings harder than on most domestic routes, because so many passengers are going home: for Christmas, for burials and weddings, and for August gatherings in the village. Here is who flies the route, what quiet-month and festive fares look like, and how to get from the runway into town. Three Airlines, Five or Six Departures a Day
On a normal day, five or six nonstop flights leave Lagos for Owerri. They are split between three airlines and two Lagos domestic terminals, and turning up at the wrong building costs far more than a few thousand naira of difference in the Lagos to Owerri flight price.
Air Peace From the GAT Zulu Hall
Air Peace runs the most flights, usually three or four a day between early morning and late afternoon, mostly on Embraer jets with the occasional Airbus A320. United Nigeria From MMA2

Air Peace’s fare calendar shows the swing clearly. In quieter months, its cheapest economy return on the route starts at about ₦197,500, roughly ₦99,000 each way. For December and January dates, the cheapest return jumps to about ₦480,400, nearly two and a half times as much.

The higher bands are where you land if you book in the last few days or travel on a weekend when several families from the same town are burying a parent. - ValueJet: the allowance depends on the fare bundle you buy.
The trip back to Lagos is usually the heavy one: yams, palm oil, ugba, dried fish and gifts from the village. If you are well over the limit, compare the airline’s excess charge with sending a box through a coach company’s parcel service. When the Runway Shuts
Sam Mbakwe Airport has an unusual history. Construction started in 1983 under Governor Sam Mbakwe, and the airport was funded largely by contributions from Imo people and the wider Igbo community before it opened on 15 July 1994. It was later handed to the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), and it has a single runway of 2,700 m.
One runway means that when it needs work, the airport stops. After the heavy rains of 2026, FAAN announced a closure of about 25 days, pencilled in to start in late October, to fix potholes and cracking and to extend the runway so it can take wide-body jets, with the aim of finishing before Christmas traffic. When Enugu’s airport closed for repairs in 2025, airlines moved its flights to Port Harcourt and Owerri.

From the Airport Into Owerri
Leaving the terminal, you join a 10 km four-lane airport road, inaugurated as Senator Bola Tinubu Drive in January 2024, which runs out to the Owerri-Aba Road. From there the city centre lies to the north-west. Allow 30 minutes to an hour to reach most hotels, longer at the evening rush around Control Post and Wetheral Road.
Your options at the Owerri airport end:

Flying Into Port Harcourt
Port Harcourt International Airport at Omagwa is about 50 km south of Owerri in a straight line, near the Owerri-Port Harcourt road. It has far more flights from Lagos than Owerri does, so when the Lagos to Owerri flight price spikes, seats sell out or the runway is closed, flying there and driving north can work. Going by Road
