Port Harcourt Airport (2026): Name, Codes, Terminals, Airlines and Getting to Town

Passenger jet at the terminal of Port Harcourt International Airport

The ticket says PHC, the signboards say Port Harcourt International Airport, and the driver who comes to collect you calls it Omagwa. All three mean the same airfield, yet a first visit to Port Harcourt airport still raises awkward questions. Which building do you go to? How far is the city? Why do two drivers quote prices thousands of naira apart?

Below you will find the official name and the renaming few people use, the codes, the two terminal buildings, the airlines that fly from Omagwa, and the roads, fares and gate fees between the airport and the city. Confirm anything that affects your booking, such as the terminal or the route, with your airline before you travel.

Port Harcourt Airport Name and Codes

The Official Name and the Awolowo Renaming

The airport is officially Port Harcourt International Airport, and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) runs it. FAAN’s own page for the airport and airline booking pages use that name.

In May 2023, hours before the Buhari government left office, the federal government approved renaming 15 airports. Port Harcourt’s became Obafemi Jeremiah Awolowo International Airport, and some official documents carry the longer name. Tickets, apps and drivers do not, so searching for the old name is still the safe choice.

Omagwa Airport Is the Same Place

Omagwa is the host community, in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State, and “Omagwa airport” is the name many people use for it. Do not confuse it with Port Harcourt City Airport, a separate airfield serving the Nigerian Air Force base inside the city. It has its own codes (PHG and DNPM), and tickets to Port Harcourt are issued to Omagwa.

IATA and ICAO Codes

The Port Harcourt airport code printed on tickets and baggage tags is PHC, the three-letter IATA code. DNPO is the four-letter ICAO code that pilots and air traffic controllers use. Type PHC into an airline app and you reach the right airport at once.

Port Harcourt Airport Location and Distance to Town

The airport lies north of the built-up city, reached by Airport Road through Igwuruta, with the Rumuokoro junction as the usual turning point for the city. For a map pin or a driver, the Port Harcourt airport address is Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa, Ikwerre Local Government Area, Rivers State. Rough road distances:

  • Rumuokoro junction: about 22 km, and a ride-hailing route page puts it at roughly 30 minutes in light traffic.
  • New GRA: about 25 km by a route-planner measure.
  • Old GRA and the waterfront districts: longer again, with guide sites giving about 30 km. FAAN does not publish a figure.

Allow far more time at rush hour and in heavy rain. If your flight lands late, a hotel that sends a driver is easier than negotiating on the forecourt; our guide to hotels in Port Harcourt lists areas and price bands.

The road itself has been a flashpoint. In December 2025, Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo commissioned a rebuilt 12.2 km Airport-Igwuruta road and flagged off a bypass and toll gate project. Governor Siminalayi Fubara said host community members had once blocked the airport road for a full day to protest over jobs, electricity and welfare. Leave extra margin for a morning flight.

Port Harcourt Airport Terminals

FAAN’s page for the airport describes two terminals on the same site, and they serve different flights.

The International Terminal

President Muhammadu Buhari commissioned the new international terminal on 25 October 2018. It handles flights abroad, so a booking to Libreville, Malabo or an overseas connection starts here.

The Domestic Terminal

Domestic flights use the older building, which FAAN’s page has described as under renovation while it carries on handling commercial flights. Expect works, changing signs and queues that build quickly before the first morning departures. Check-in counters are grouped by airline.

Which Building to Tell Your Driver

  1. Read the itinerary. Flights to Lagos and Abuja on Nigerian airlines are domestic.
  2. Treat flights to Libreville, Malabo and the Lufthansa and Qatar Airways services as international, and ask the airline to confirm the building.
  3. Name the terminal to the driver. “Domestic” or “international” works better than “the airport”.
  4. If your airline sends a terminal message before the flight, follow it over anything published elsewhere, including this page.

Check-In Times and Arriving Early

Every airline sets its own check-in window. United Nigeria’s FAQ, for example, says physical check-in opens two hours before departure and closes 45 minutes before, which leaves little room if the drive from the city goes wrong. Work backwards from the closing time rather than the departure time, then add the Airport Road margin from the section above.

Airlines at Port Harcourt Airport

Lagos and Abuja carry most of the traffic. A Port Harcourt airport flight schedule changes by season and airline, so the table lists what airline websites and schedule sites show. Treat it as a starting point rather than a timetable, and read the times on the airline’s own booking page.

At the Lagos end, Arik lists its Port Harcourt flights under MMA2 and United Nigeria’s FAQ places its Lagos departures at MMA2. For other airlines, read the terminal on the ticket.

Prices on the Lagos route move with the day and the airline, and our Lagos to Port Harcourt flight price guide shows what to expect. Fares climb at holiday peaks, so book early if your dates are fixed.

Qatar Airways passengers board at Omagwa, land in Abuja and continue to Doha on the same flight number, and schedule reports describe Lufthansa’s Frankfurt flight the same way. These are international tickets, so ask the airline before assuming you can buy only the Abuja leg.

Getting From Port Harcourt Airport Into Town

Ride-Hailing and Airport Taxis

Bolt serves the airport. Its app shows the pickup points and warns that they can change, so look before you walk out. A Bolt route page estimates about ₦5,850 for an economy car to Rumuokoro and about ₦8,500 for a comfort car. Treat those as the low end, since fares rise with traffic and demand.

FAAN has announced a phased car hire rank system called ACHRAMS for its airports, which shows a fare estimate that driver and passenger then agree. FAAN has said it is not a ban on e-hailing and that it is talking to Uber and Bolt about pickups.

Wherever you end up, settle the fare before the doors close, match the plate to the app and ignore anyone who approaches you inside the terminal. Port Harcourt airport is far enough from the city that a fare agreed in a hurry usually costs more than one agreed calmly.

Pre-Arranged Pickups

Hotels, employers and relatives can send a driver, and that is the calmest option after dark. FAAN introduced new car park and access gate tariffs at Port Harcourt from 1 March 2026, reported at ₦500 per entry for a car and ₦1,000 for an SUV, and tariffs can change. A driver collecting you may add the gate fee to the fare.

Meeting Someone at Port Harcourt Airport

If you are collecting a relative, the access gate fee applies to your car on the way in, and car park charges follow once you park. Port Harcourt airport arrivals from Lagos and Abuja come out of the domestic terminal, so wait there unless the person is on an overseas or Libreville flight. Domestic flights are often late, so follow the flight on the airline’s app and leave home when it shows as landed.

Safety and Timing

Fly in during daylight if you can. If you cannot, arrange the pickup in advance, keep your phone charged and do not accept lifts from strangers. In December 2025, the NCAA issued Port Harcourt an aerodrome certificate after inspections and corrective action plans, though FAAN acknowledged that some items remained open.

Who to Contact

FAAN’s page for the airport lists contact@faan.gov.ng and +234 1 2800842, both for its Lagos head office, and shows no separate Port Harcourt desk. For a problem with a flight rather than the building, start with the airline’s own customer care.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Port Harcourt Airport the Same as Omagwa?

Yes. Omagwa is the host community, and both names, along with PHC, refer to the same airport in Ikwerre Local Government Area. Only the Air Force airfield in the city has a different code.

Is There a Nonstop Flight From Port Harcourt to Europe?

Published schedules show none. Qatar Airways’ Doha flight stops in Abuja, schedule reports show Lufthansa’s Frankfurt flight doing the same, and Air France sells a connection through Libreville on Afrijet. If your onward flight leaves from Abuja, our Abuja airport terminal guide explains the buildings there.

Where Do I Complain If a Flight From Omagwa Goes Wrong?

Speak to the airline first. The NCAA says unresolved complaints go to its consumer protection desk at the airport, its online complaint portal or cpd@ncaa.gov.ng, and its Port Harcourt office is on the airport grounds. For domestic flights, the NCAA says a delay of more than three hours entitles you to a full refund of the ticket value.

Does Port Harcourt Airport Have Lounges and Shops?

FAAN does not publish a list of what is open at Omagwa, and the facilities named on guide sites are not confirmed by any official source. Carry some cash and a snack, and treat any lounge or restaurant as a bonus rather than a plan.

Before You Leave for Port Harcourt Airport

Confirm the terminal with your airline, book your pickup before you land and leave early enough to absorb a slow or blocked Airport Road. Keep the airline’s contact details somewhere you can reach without mobile data.
