Flying into Delta State sounds simple until you land and start asking questions. Is Asaba airport near the river and Onitsha, or out on the Benin side of town? Can you reach Onitsha from it without losing half a day on the bridge? Which airlines actually fly in, and from which Lagos terminal?
The answers below cover the name and ABB code, the airline and route picture, the Lagos terminals, the ride into Asaba and the crossing to Onitsha, with the roads and bridges that decide how long each trip takes. Check flight times with your airline, because they change more often than the airport does.
Asaba Airport Name and Codes
What It Is Called and Who Runs It
The airport is called Asaba International Airport and serves Asaba, the capital of Delta State. The Delta State government opened it on 13 July 2011. The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) downgraded it in 2015, after which the state rebuilt the runway and added an instrument landing system and lighting for night flying. It closed for upgrades in April 2018 and reopened in June 2018.
Since August 2021 it has been operated by Asaba Airport Company under a 30-year concession signed on 23 February 2021. Air Peace is the anchor airline in the consortium. The runway is 3,400 metres long and has an instrument landing system.
The Airport Codes
The Asaba airport code is ABB, the three-letter IATA code printed on tickets and baggage tags. DNAS is the ICAO code used by pilots and air traffic control. If an app asks for the airport, typing ABB finds it at once.
Despite the word “international” in its name, the scheduled flights shown by schedule sites are domestic, to Lagos and Abuja.
Asaba Airport Location and Distance to Town
The airport sits on the Benin side of Asaba, west of the city centre, not on the river side. Coordinates place it about 8 km from the centre. Bolt route pages measure 5.4 km from the Federal Secretariat Complex, about 11 minutes, and 7.1 km from Shoprite Asaba, about 13 minutes. Those are road estimates in light traffic.
Asaba stands on the west bank of the Niger, and Onitsha, in Anambra State, is on the east bank. Onitsha is roughly 21 km from the airport by a route-planner measure, and the real time depends almost entirely on the bridges. We cover that crossing further down.
If you are driving in from Benin, Agbor or Ibusa, check the state of the Benin-Asaba Expressway first. Motorists spent days stuck on damaged sections during one bad spell in August 2026, and Works Minister Dave Umahi gave the contractor 14 days to repair them. If you are weighing a flight against the road from Lagos, our Lagos to Asaba bus price guide gives the coach fares to compare.
Asaba Airport Flights and Airlines
Schedule sites show two routes: Lagos and Abuja. Flight time is about an hour on both. Air Peace lists Asaba among its 19 domestic destinations, and United Nigeria Airlines lists it among its top destinations, so both sell the route on their own websites. Searchers often type the first airline as one word, airpeace, but whichever spelling you use, buy from the airline’s own booking page and not from a reseller that merely lists the route.
| Route | Airlines Shown | Where to Confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Lagos to Asaba | Air Peace, United Nigeria Airlines, Aero Contractors, Arik Air | The airline’s booking page |
| Abuja to Asaba | Air Peace, United Nigeria Airlines, Aero Contractors | The airline’s booking page |
Air Peace appears with more than one flight a day on both routes, and United Nigeria with at least one. Aero Contractors and Arik Air show up with fewer days or with start dates, so treat them as options to confirm rather than certainties. ValueJet publishes an Asaba to Lagos page, but a page is not a schedule, so search a real date before you count on it. Older reference lists also name Max Air and Overland Airways at Asaba; schedule sites do not show them.
Rain can disrupt this airport. Air Peace has issued operations updates naming Asaba among the airports delayed by heavy rainfall, so leave slack if you have a connection or a meeting the same day.
Lagos Terminals, Airport Facilities and Delays
Which Lagos Terminal for Asaba
Arik’s website lists Lagos to Asaba under MMA1, the General Aviation Terminal (GAT). For the other airlines, read the terminal on your ticket rather than assuming. Our Lagos airport terminal guide explains which building is which, and the wrong one can cost you your check-in slot.
Inside Asaba Airport
The concession plan calls for a terminal upgrade and extension, a cargo terminal and a business park, so expect a modest passenger building and do not count on shops or a lounge. Bring snacks and some cash.
Parking uses cashless payment, since Asaba Airport Company deployed an automated Interswitch parking system. The report on it gives no tariffs, so ask the person driving you what the barrier charges, and carry a card or phone payment.
If Your Flight Is Delayed or Cancelled
Speak to the airline first, then escalate. The NCAA lists three routes for an unresolved complaint: its consumer protection desk at an airport, its website, or cpd@ncaa.gov.ng.
Its published passenger rules for domestic flights are short. Refreshments are due after two hours, and a delay beyond three hours entitles you to reimbursement of the full ticket value. If the airline cancels and did not tell you at least 24 hours ahead, compensation of 25 per cent of the fare applies on top of your choice of refund or rerouting. The airline can avoid that payment by proving extraordinary circumstances, which is where weather arguments start.
Keep the booking reference, the screenshots of any change message and the receipt together, because the airline’s side of a dispute usually starts with what it told you and when.
Getting From the Airport Into Asaba
Ride-Hailing and Taxis
Bolt route pages list Asaba airport as a destination. Their estimates are about ₦2,050 from the Federal Secretariat Complex and about ₦2,350 from Shoprite Asaba for an economy car, which is a baseline because fares rise with demand. Ride-hailing availability varies, so keep a driver’s number as a backup, and agree the fare before you set off if you take a taxi at the airport.
Hotels and Pickups
A hotel pickup is the calmest way in, especially on a late flight, and it is worth asking what the hotel charges when you book rather than at the arrivals door. Our guide to hotels in Asaba lists areas and price levels. Give the driver the hotel’s name and a nearby landmark, such as the Federal Secretariat Complex or Shoprite, which are the reference points the ride-hailing route pages use.
Asaba Airport to Onitsha: Crossing the Niger
Two bridges link Asaba to Onitsha, and the one that works best changes.
The First Niger Bridge, opened in 1965, is the old crossing at Onitsha Head Bridge. It is often congested with traffic and informal traders. It has been shut for emergency repairs before, for about two weeks, extended by a further week because of rain, with traffic sent over the Second Niger Bridge by way of Obosi.
The Second Niger Bridge opened to traffic on 15 December 2022. Work on a 17.55 km access road on the Asaba side began in 2025, and reports have put progress well short of completion, so ask drivers which route they take to the bridge before you commit.
Before you travel:
- Ask the driver or your host which bridge is moving. Never assume.
- Fix the fare for the full trip, including the wait on the bridge approach.
- Cross in daylight if you can, and avoid the morning and late-afternoon rushes.
- Going back, plan to reach the airport well before check-in closes, with an hour of slack for the bridge.
If Anambra is your real destination, there is another option. Chinua Achebe International Airport at Umueri has had Air Peace and United Nigeria flights to Lagos and Abuja, and a Bolt route page puts it 34 km from Asaba airport. Compare both before you buy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Asaba Airport Really International?
By name, yes, but schedule sites show only domestic flights to Lagos and Abuja. If you need a foreign destination, you will connect through Lagos or Abuja.
How Far Is Asaba Airport From Onitsha?
About 21 km by a route-planner measure, but the road time depends on the Niger bridges. Allow generously, and ask which bridge is moving before you set off.
Which Airlines Fly the Lagos to Asaba Route?
Air Peace and United Nigeria are the steadiest names on schedule sites, with Aero Contractors and Arik Air listed on fewer days. Search your exact date with each airline.
Is There Another Airport Near Onitsha?
Yes. Chinua Achebe International Airport at Umueri in Anambra State has had Air Peace and United Nigeria flights to Lagos and Abuja. It is on the Anambra side of the river, so you avoid the bridge, but the road from Umueri to your destination still counts.
Where Can I Follow Asaba Airport News?
Asaba airport news tends to surface first in the airlines’ own operations updates, like the Air Peace rain-delay notices mentioned above, and in reports on the concession company. Treat any item as a prompt to check your own flight with the airline, because a news story is not a schedule.
Before You Fly Into Asaba
Book a flight with a terminal you have confirmed, arrange the first ride before you land and ask which bridge is moving before you head for Onitsha. Leave a margin on the return, because the airport is easy and the bridge is not.
