Lagos to Jos Bus Price: Night Coaches, the Abuja Split and Arriving on the Plateau (2026)

Lagos to Jos Bus Price: Night Coaches, the Abuja Split and Arriving on the Plateau

Jos sits about 1,200 metres up on the Plateau, roughly 1,000 km of road from Lagos, and the coach ride there is one of the longest single journeys a Lagos transport company sells. Many direct buses roll into the Tin City around dawn, when the air is cold enough to surprise anyone who packed for Lagos weather.

The Lagos to Jos bus price is still a small share of a plane ticket, which keeps students, traders and returning families on the road. What the fare does not tell you is the choice you have to make first: one long night on the bus, or two shorter days with a stop in Abuja.

The Lagos to Jos Bus Price, Option by Option

No one publishes a single fare for this route. Each company sets its own, and the figure follows the cost of fuel. Treat these ranges as approximate and confirm on the operator’s website, app or counter before you pay.

How you travelApproximate one-way costTypical time on the road
Direct coach from a branded operator₦45,000 to ₦65,00014 to 18 hours
Lagos to Abuja coach, then a bus on to Jos₦35,000 to ₦55,000 for the Abuja leg, plus the Jos leg and a night’s stayTwo days
Nonstop flight to JosSeveral times the bus fareAbout 1 hour 30 minutes
Flight to Abuja, then road to JosAbuja air fare plus the Jos legAbout 8 to 9 hours door to door

A direct seat costs more than a Lagos to Abuja ticket, but it covers close to 300 km of extra road and saves you a hotel bill. Splitting costs more overall, yet it keeps the whole journey in daylight.

Seasons move the Lagos to Jos bus price just as they move eastern fares: up from mid-December to early January, around Easter, and before both Sallah holidays. When the Association of Luxury Bus Owners of Nigeria ran a government-backed half-fare scheme over Christmas 2023, Lagos to Jos was on its list alongside the big eastern and northern runs.

Who Sells a Bus From Lagos to Jos

Only a few branded companies sell a through ticket, and schedules change, so use this as a starting list and check the operator’s own site before you build plans around it.

Young Shall Grow Motors

Young Shall Grow began in 1972 with minibuses between Enugu and Onitsha and moved its base to Lagos a year later. Its head office is on Old Ojo Road, Maza-Maza, and its website names Jos among the northern cities it serves, alongside Abuja, Kano, Sokoto, Maiduguri and Yola. In Lagos it lists terminals at Maza-Maza, Jibowu, Ijora and Otto by Iddo, among others, so ask which one loads the Jos coach. Routes and terminals are covered in our Young Shall Grow Motors price list.

Cross Country

The Yaba-based operator lists its own terminal in Jos as part of a northern network that also reaches Kaduna, Kano, Bauchi and Maiduguri, and its northbound buses load at Yaba and Jibowu. A traveller bound for Lafia, which shares the Keffi and Akwanga road with Jos-bound buses, once found the bus parked overnight in Abuja, so ask whether yours goes straight through.

ABC Transport

ABC names Jos among its terminal cities, but its published timetable shows no regular Lagos to Jos departure, only Sprinters and evening coaches as far as Abuja. ABC regulars can ride to Abuja and change there, or ask the Jibowu desk whether a Jos service is running on their date.

Other Lines and the Open Parks

Long-distance luxury firms in the bus owners’ association, such as Chisco and God Bless Ezenwata, also run northern services from mainland Lagos, and many northbound coaches load in the Iddo, Otto and Oyingbo area rather than at Jibowu. Unbranded park buses go north from the same streets and leave when full. They can undercut the Lagos to Jos bus price of the big names, but you get no seat number, no booking record and little help if something goes wrong.

Lagos to Jos by Road: Three Corridors

The Lagos to Jos distance by road is roughly 990 to 1,050 km, depending on the corridor. In a straight line the two cities are only about 720 km apart, which shows how far the road has to swing around the Niger and the hills. Drivers use one of three lines:

  • Through Ilorin, Jebba and Mokwa. After Ibadan and Ogbomoso, the bus crosses the Niger at Jebba, runs through Mokwa and Bida into the Suleja and Abuja area, then heads east through Keffi and Akwanga. Route planners usually rate this the quickest line.
  • Through Lokoja. The same Kogi road most Lagos to Abuja coaches use, through Lokoja, Koton Karfe and Abaji, then east from Abuja.
  • Through Kaduna. A longer swing north to Kaduna before turning south-east for the climb onto the Plateau.

On a clear road the pure driving time is about 12 to 13 hours. Add fuel and food stops, checkpoints, a slow climb up to Jos and the occasional breakdown, and 14 to 18 hours terminal to terminal is a realistic plan. The corridor rarely changes the Lagos to Jos bus price, but it can change your arrival time by hours. It depends on the company, the season and the latest security news, so ask at the counter.

Night Coach or Two Days in Daylight?

Evening departures that reach Jos between dawn and mid-morning are common on this route. You save a hotel night, and some drivers argue that night runs attract fewer attacks; one former coach driver told BusinessDay that many night buses travel with armed security the passengers never see. The downside is plain: a breakdown at 2 a.m. leaves you waiting in the dark, and you arrive tired at the coldest hour.

Curfews can also catch a night bus out. Plateau’s government has imposed dusk-to-dawn curfews on rural council areas such as Barkin Ladi, Bokkos and Mangu after attacks, and has restricted movement in parts of Jos North after unrest. Check the news before you pick a departure that lands you after dark.

If you would rather see the road, take a morning coach to Abuja, sleep there and continue the next morning. Our Lagos to Abuja bus price guide covers that first leg; ask for Mararaba if your coach stops there, because it sits on the Keffi road and puts you on the right side of the capital for Jos.

The Abuja to Jos road runs about 270 km through Keffi and Akwanga and usually takes four to five hours. Plateau Express, the state-owned company once called Plateau Riders, runs Toyota Siennas and Coasters fitted with trackers between Abuja and Jos, and moved the service onto the Akwanga road from the Gidan Waya axis. In 2024, ThisDay reported its Sienna seats at ₦9,000 and Coaster seats at ₦5,000; fuel has risen since, so expect more.

Staying Safe on the Middle Belt Stretches

Every corridor to Jos crosses country with a security history, and a branded operator with a passenger list is worth paying a little above the cheapest Lagos to Jos bus price.

  • Niger State. Residents blocked the Mokwa-Bida highway in August 2026 to protest kidnappings, stranding travellers overnight. The Mokwa bridge also collapsed in the May 2025 flood, so check the road status if your bus takes this line.
  • Kogi. The Lokoja to Abuja stretch has a long kidnapping record, which is why most coaches cross it in daylight.
  • Akwanga to Jos. Transport observers quoted by BusinessDay listed this road among the country’s highway flashpoints.

A few habits help on any bus from Lagos to Jos:

  1. Give accurate next-of-kin details at booking; the manifest is how the company finds your family if anything happens.
  2. Send someone the bus number, your seat and the expected arrival time, and carry a charged power bank.
  3. Keep your ID card in a pocket, not your bag, for the checkpoints.
  4. If the bus stops for the night, stay with the group at the company yard rather than wandering off to find a cheaper room.

Stepping Off the Bus in Jos

There is no single central bus station. Each company finishes at its own yard, and coaches often make more than one drop-off in Plateau, so ask when booking which stop is nearest your address. The Terminus area by the main market in Jos North is the usual reference point for taxis, so tell the conductor where you are heading before the last stretch.

At about 1,200 metres, Jos is far cooler than Lagos. From mid-November to late January, night temperatures can fall to around 7°C, and a night bus lands you at exactly that hour. Keep a sweater or jacket in your hand luggage rather than in the boot. The rains run from about April to October, heaviest in July and August, and hail is not unknown.

Many passengers carry Plateau produce home: sacks of Irish potatoes, carrots and cabbages. Anything bulky usually attracts a loading-bay charge on top of the Lagos to Jos bus price, so agree the amount before the sack goes in and keep the tag. Once you have warmed up, our guide to places to visit in Jos covers what to see in and around the city.

Flying to Jos, or Flying to Abuja and Driving

Yakubu Gowon Airport is at Heipang, roughly 30 km south of the city centre, with a 3,000-metre runway but few flights. Arik Air and ValueJet are the airlines with nonstop Lagos services, together offering a handful of flights a week rather than several a day, and the flight takes about 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes. ValueJet restarted the route in April 2025 under an agreement with the Plateau State Government, and Arik’s Jos flights use the GAT on the old domestic side of Lagos airport.

On a thin route like this, fares can sit at several times the Lagos to Jos bus price, and a cancelled flight can mean waiting days for the next one. Search the airlines’ own sites for your exact date before ruling it out.

The more flexible option is to fly into Abuja, which has dozens of daily flights, and finish on the Abuja to Jos road. Our Lagos to Abuja flight price guide compares the airlines on that leg. Land before midday so the road part ends in daylight.

What Jos-Bound Passengers Ask

How Much Is a Bus From Lagos to Jos?

A direct seat with a branded operator usually costs about ₦45,000 to ₦65,000 one way. The Lagos to Jos bus price climbs in December, at Easter and around Sallah, so confirm with the operator on the day.

How Long Is Lagos to Jos by Road?

Plan for 14 to 18 hours on a direct coach. A stop in Abuja turns it into two days, with four to five hours on the final leg.

Is It Better to Break the Journey in Abuja?

If you dislike night travel, yes. Two fares plus a room cost more than the direct Lagos to Jos bus price, but you see every kilometre in daylight and arrive in Jos rested.

What Should I Pack for Arriving in Jos?

A warm layer you can reach without opening the boot, especially from mid-November to late January. Nights on the Plateau can drop to single figures.

The cheapest ticket is rarely the best value on a trip this long. A known operator, a clear plan for where you will sleep, and a jacket in your hand luggage matter more than a few thousand naira off the Lagos to Jos bus price.
