Roughly 1,000 km of road lies between Lagos and Kano, more than the distance from Lagos to Accra and back. That single fact shapes everything about this trip: most direct buses travel overnight, only a handful of branded operators sell direct seats, and many passengers end up breaking the journey in Abuja.
The Lagos to Kano bus price is still a fraction of the air fare, which keeps traders, students and families on the road. The catch is time. Depending on how you do it, the journey takes anything from about 13 hours to two days.
Three Ways to Make the Trip
Before you compare fares, decide which kind of journey you want:
- A direct overnight bus. You board in the late afternoon or evening in Lagos and arrive in Kano early the next morning. It is the cheapest option in money and in days off work, but you spend a night on the road.
- Two daytime buses with a night in Abuja. Lagos to Abuja on a morning coach, a bed in Abuja, then an early bus north. It costs more once you add a hotel, but every kilometre is in daylight.
- A flight. About 1 hour 30 minutes in the air, at several times the Lagos to Kano bus price.
Lagos to Kano Bus Price at a Glance
These are approximate one-way figures. They change with petrol prices and season, so confirm on the day.
| Option | Approximate one-way cost | Typical time |
|---|---|---|
| Direct bus from a branded operator | ₦40,000 to ₦60,000 | 13 to 18 hours |
| Lagos to Abuja bus plus Abuja to Kano bus | ₦55,000 to ₦80,000, plus a night’s stay | Two travel days |
| Economy flight | Return fares on the airline’s own site often start around ₦108,000 on quiet dates | About 1 hour 30 minutes |
Festive travel changes the picture sharply. Sallah is the big peak on this corridor, as many northerners living in Lagos travel home for Eid, and park fares can jump sharply in the days before. December is busy too, so book early for either.
Direct Buses and Where They Load in Lagos
Much of Lagos’s northbound road traffic loads around Iddo and Oyingbo on the mainland, and Agege is another hub for buses heading north. Most direct seats on this route leave from these areas or from an operator’s own terminal.
Evening Departures From Oyingbo
Online bus booking platforms list evening departures from the Oyingbo area, with one typical schedule leaving at 5:00 p.m. and reaching Kano a little before 6:00 a.m. That overnight pattern is the usual way to ride a night bus to Kano: you lose a night’s sleep but save a hotel bill.
Branded Operators
A few branded lines, Cross Country among them, run northbound coaches out of Lagos, so ask whether yours is a through service or changes at Abuja. Peace Mass Transit, better known for its eastern routes, does not list a Kano terminal on its terminals page, so do not plan a Kano trip around it. Whichever operator you pick, ask three things before you pay: where the bus ends in Kano, whether it stops overnight at Abuja, and whether the seat price covers your luggage.
A practical check for any direct Lagos to Kano bus price: ask how many stops the bus makes and whether it carries standing passengers on the last leg. Cheaper seats often come with more stops.
Splitting the Journey at Abuja
Splitting the trip is the choice for anyone who would rather not travel at night. The first leg is the busy Lagos-Abuja corridor, where GIGM, ABC Transport and Cross Country all run early-morning coaches. Our Lagos to Abuja bus price guide covers that leg in detail, including which Abuja park to stop at.
For the second leg, go to the Utako area, where northbound parks, including the one known locally as Kano Line, load buses for Kano from before dawn. Aim to leave Abuja by about 6:00 a.m. so you arrive in daylight.
An Abuja to Kano bus from the motor parks cost about ₦13,000 to ₦15,000 after a fuel-driven increase, with premium seats from branded operators costing more. Add that to the first leg and a hotel night, and the split trip usually costs more than the direct Lagos to Kano bus price, but it is the calmer way to travel.
What Pushes the Lagos to Kano Bus Price Up or Down
Three forces explain most of the movement you will see:
- Petrol. Northern drivers buy fuel at different prices along the way and pass the cost on. When petrol prices fell, some drivers at Na’ibawa Motor Park in Kano cut their Abuja fare by only ₦1,000, and others did not cut at all, so do not expect savings to show up quickly in the Lagos to Kano bus price.
- Load factor. On park buses, the Abuja to Kano bus fare has varied with the number of passengers waiting, so a half-empty vehicle may charge more or wait longer.
- The national trend. Official transport fare figures put the average intercity bus fare in Nigeria at about ₦9,600 per trip, more than a fifth higher than a year earlier. Long routes such as this one sit far above that average, but they follow the same direction.
Travelling With Goods
Many passengers on this corridor carry trade goods. Some operators handle goods as well as passengers, so declare bulky loads at the counter, pay the goods charge separately from your seat, and ask for a written waybill rather than a verbal promise from the loader.
Lagos to Kano by Road: Distance, Corridors and Checkpoints
The Lagos to Kano distance is about 1,000 km by road and roughly 840 km in a straight line. Buses take one of two broad corridors:
- Through Abuja. South-west to Lokoja, up the Abuja-Lokoja highway, then north on the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano road.
- Through Ilorin and Niger State. North from Ibadan through Ilorin and across the Niger at Jebba, then east towards the Kaduna axis.
Both corridors end on the same road. The Abuja-Kaduna-Kano highway, about 375 km long, has been rebuilt as a concrete dual carriageway in three sections: Zuba to Jere, Kaduna to Zaria, and Zaria to Kano. The first completed section ran to 118 km, and during holiday periods the Works Minister has ordered finished stretches opened to traffic early. Where work continues, expect diversions on single carriageways.
Security is the bigger issue. The Abuja-Kaduna road has a long record of kidnappings, and in March 2022 gunmen attacked a passenger train on the parallel railway. Further west, the Kaduna to Birnin Gwari road remains dangerous, with a traveller killed by bandits even after the state government declared it safe. A well-run operator will choose its corridor based on current security reports, and the Lagos to Kano bus price you pay partly covers that judgement.
Arriving in Kano: Motor Parks and Terminals
Kano motor parks are spread around the old city and its outskirts, and each serves particular directions. A drop-off on the wrong side of the city can add a surprising taxi fare to the Lagos to Kano bus price, so confirm where your bus ends before you board and arrange a pickup.
Na’ibawa Motor Park
On the Zaria Road side of the city, Na’ibawa is a major park for traffic to and from Abuja and the south. If you return by splitting the trip, this is a common place to find an early bus to Abuja.
‘Yan Kaba Motor Park
Not a Lagos arrival point, but useful if Kano is not your final stop: ‘Yan Kaba handles buses east towards Yobe and Damaturu.
The Rail Picture: Old Line and New Line
There is no dependable through train. The old narrow gauge Lagos-Kano Express once ran weekly from Iddo, and in early 2013 the journey took about 31 hours. The service has been suspended repeatedly since then: by a washout near Osogbo, by insecurity, and by vandalism. The Nigerian Railway Corporation has shut stations in Niger and Kaduna States because of banditry, and erosion has damaged the track at Mokwa.
The more useful rail news is the new standard gauge line. The Kaduna-Kano section has been under construction, and once it carries passengers, you will be able to ride the existing Abuja-Kaduna train and continue to Kano by rail. Our Lagos to Kano train guide explains the older service, its stations and its history in more detail.
When Flying Beats the Bus
Several airlines fly nonstop between Murtala Muhammed Airport and Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, including Air Peace, Max Air, Aero Contractors, Rano Air and United Nigeria. The straight-line distance is about 838 km, and the flight takes about 1 hour 30 minutes.
On Air Peace’s own fare pages, economy return tickets on this route have ranged from about ₦108,000 on quieter dates to around ₦214,000 on busier ones, with January dates climbing far higher. That is several times the Lagos to Kano bus price, but it saves a full day each way. Compare carriers and booking windows in our Lagos to Kano flight price guide.
Flying makes the most sense if you are travelling for less than four days, or if you need to arrive rested for business.
Questions Travellers Ask About Lagos to Kano by Bus

Not reliably. The narrow gauge service has been suspended for long periods, so check with the Nigerian Railway Corporation before you plan around it.
