Few things spoil the start of a trip like being told at the check-in counter that your bag is overweight. Air Peace charges for excess baggage on every type of route, and the rules differ depending on whether you are flying domestic, regional or international.
This guide explains Air Peace excess baggage fees in plain terms: how much free baggage you get, what you pay for extra weight or extra bags, how to pay, and simple ways to avoid the charges altogether.
Source: All figures below are taken from the Air Peace baggage policy on the airline’s official website, checked in October 2026. Airlines can change fees at short notice, so check the policy again a few days before you fly.

Air Peace excess baggage fees by route
Domestic flights
On domestic flights, excess baggage is charged by weight.
| Item | Fee |
|---|---|
| Each kilogram above your free allowance | ₦1,000 per kg |
| Where to pay | At the airport, before check-in |
Air Peace introduced this rate in September 2022, when it doubled the domestic excess fee from ₦500 to ₦1,000 per kg and cut the economy allowance from 20 kg to 15 kg.
Regional flights
| Excess | Economy fee |
|---|---|
| 1–9 kg over the allowance | USD 15 per kg |
| 9 kg or more over the allowance | Charged as an extra piece |
| Each additional piece | USD 150 |
London flights
London has its own rates, which depend on the direction of travel and when you pay.
| Excess (Economy) | Fee |
|---|---|
| 1–9 kg, Lagos/Abuja to London | USD 20 per kg |
| 1–9 kg, London to Lagos/Abuja | GBP 15 per kg |
| Extra piece, bought online at least 6 hours before departure | USD 150 or GBP 100 |
| Extra piece, paid at the airport | USD 200 or GBP 150 |
Once you are 10 kg or more over, the airline treats the extra weight as an additional piece. Business and First Class passengers cannot buy extra kilograms — each bag is capped at 32 kg.
Other international routes
For other international routes, extra bags are charged per piece at the airport. The policy lists USD 100 per bag on Johannesburg flights, USD 150 on Dubai flights and USD 220 on Mumbai flights.
Worked examples
Here is how the fees play out in practice:
- Lagos to Abuja, Economy, one 20 kg bag: 5 kg over the 15 kg allowance × ₦1,000 = ₦5,000.
- Lagos to Port Harcourt, Economy, 15 kg bag plus a 10 kg carton: 10 kg over × ₦1,000 = ₦10,000.
- Lagos to London, Economy, one bag at 28 kg: 5 kg over × USD 20 = USD 100.
- Lagos to London, Economy, a third bag: USD 150 if bought online at least 6 hours before departure, or USD 200 at the airport.
How to pay for excess baggage
Domestic: Pay at the Air Peace ticket or excess baggage desk at the airport before you check in. Arrive early, because queues can be long, especially at Lagos and Abuja.
London: You can buy an extra piece online at least 6 hours before departure at a lower rate. Paying at the airport costs more.
Other routes: Excess charges are paid at the airport. Ask at check-in about accepted payment methods and keep your receipt.
Rules that can catch you out
- Maximum 32 kg per bag on all routes, even if you are willing to pay.
- Baggage pooling — combining allowances — is only allowed for passengers on the same booking.
- “Ghana Must Go” bags (polypropylene bags) must be bubble-wrapped after they are accepted at check-in.
- Infants paying 10% of the adult fare get a maximum of 10 kg of luggage.
- Valuables such as electronics, jewellery, cash, documents and medication should go in your hand luggage. Air Peace does not accept liability for these in checked baggage unless declared.
Cabin baggage limits
| Route | Economy | Business |
|---|---|---|
| Domestic and regional | 1 piece up to 6 kg (max 45 × 33 × 20 cm), plus a laptop or purse up to 2 kg | 10 kg, plus a laptop or purse up to 2 kg |
| International | 10 kg, plus a small handbag up to 4 kg | 14 kg, plus a small handbag up to 4 kg |
Oversized or overweight cabin bags may be moved to the hold and charged as checked baggage.
How to avoid paying excess baggage fees
- Weigh your bags at home. A cheap luggage scale can save you thousands of naira.
- Pack heavy items in your cabin bag — within the weight limit — and wear your heaviest shoes and jacket.
- Travel with family on one booking so you can pool your allowances.
- Pre-pay online on London routes if you know you need an extra bag.
- Send bulky goods by cargo or a courier if they would push you far over the limit.
- Upgrade if it makes sense. On domestic routes, the jump from 15 kg to 30 kg in Business can sometimes cost less than heavy excess fees.
