Aba is the largest city in the South-East and a manufacturing town at heart, so the buses that leave Lagos for it every morning carry as many traders as homecoming families. People ride east to buy shoes, bags and clothing in bulk, then come back with sacks of stock in the boot. That is why the luggage rules on this route can matter as much as the seat itself.
The Lagos to Aba bus price depends mostly on the class of bus you choose and the week you travel. Every figure below is approximate and moves with petrol prices, so confirm the live fare on the operator’s app, website or counter before you pay.
Lagos to Aba Bus Price by Class of Seat
Each company sets its own fares, so there is no single official Lagos to Aba bus price. What you can compare is the type of seat. Some lines sell a basic bus without air conditioning, others sell only air-conditioned buses, and a few offer car seats in a Toyota Sienna.
| Seat type | Who sells it | Approximate one-way fare |
|---|---|---|
| Standard bus, no air conditioning | Peace Mass Transit’s Standard class | Around ₦35,000 to ₦38,000 |
| Air-conditioned Hiace, Sprinter or premium bus | Peace Mass Transit Premium, GIGM, GUO | Around ₦38,000 to ₦50,000 |
| Toyota Sienna car seat | Some eastern operators | Usually a fifth or more above the same company’s bus seat |
| Overnight coach to Owerri, then a local bus | ABC Transport | About ₦30,000 to Owerri, plus a short local fare |
For a firm reference point, Peace Mass Transit’s own fare board has listed its Standard seat between Aba and Jibowu at ₦35,000, and its Premium air-conditioned seat from Ibadan to Aba at ₦34,000. A Premium seat from Lagos sits a little above that Ibadan figure because of the extra distance.
December is when the Lagos to Aba bus price climbs hardest. Operators have warned of festive rises of 20% to 30% on eastern routes, and seats into Aba sell out from about the third week of December, then again for the return trip in the first week of January.
Abia is also one of the dearer states for intercity bus travel generally. In one National Bureau of Statistics fare survey, it had the second-highest average intercity bus fare of any state, at about ₦11,066 per trip against a national average of about ₦9,700.
Transport Companies From Lagos to Aba
Plenty of eastern lines pass near Aba, but fewer sell a direct ticket into the city. These are the ones worth checking first.
Peace Mass Transit
Peace Mass Transit (PMT) runs a dedicated Aba terminal at No. 1 Factory Road, opposite Aba Town Hall, and its booking system lists Aba to Jibowu as a direct route. In Lagos, it loads from Jibowu (19 Ikorodu Road), Ojota (by the filling station beside Biode Park, towards Ketu), Maza-Maza (First Gate on the Badagry Expressway), Ajah (by the Abraham Adesanya roundabout), Ikorodu (Shagamu Road) and Agboju on Old Ojo Road.
PMT is usually the cheapest branded option for a bus from Lagos to Aba because it still sells non-air-conditioned Standard seats alongside its Premium class. Our Peace Mass Transit price list covers its other routes and classes. If you pick Standard, choose a window seat on the shaded side; nine hours without air conditioning in the dry season is hard going.
GIGM
GIGM’s Lagos terminals are at Jibowu, Iyana Ipaja, FESTAC and Ajah, and it has sold Iyana Ipaja to Aba seats for years. Its app shows the live Lagos to Aba bus price and departure time for each terminal, which saves a wasted trip if your nearest terminal has no Aba bus that day.
GUO Transport
GUO, the Onitsha-headquartered line, lists Lagos to Aba among its routes on its own website. Its Lagos operations include Jibowu and Iyana Ipaja. Check the app or call the terminal the day before, because the departure point for Aba can differ from the one for Onitsha or Enugu.
ABC Transport
ABC has an Aba terminal at 2 Ikot Ekpene Road, but its booking site lists Aba services only from Abuja and Enugu, not from Lagos. What ABC does offer is a fallback for Lagos travellers. Its Sprinter to Owerri leaves Jibowu in the early morning, and its overnight Executive Express from Bolade, Oshodi, has been priced at about ₦30,000, which can cut the Lagos to Aba bus price if you are happy to ride through the night.
From Owerri, Aba is roughly 63 km and about an hour away by local bus or taxi. The Lagos to Owerri bus guide explains that leg and its terminals.
Lagos to Aba Distance and the Road You Will Ride
The Lagos to Aba distance is about 590 km by road. Most buses take the same chain of highways:
- Out of Lagos to the Sagamu interchange, then through Ijebu-Ode to Ore.
- Ore to Benin City, the busiest truck stretch of the trip.
- Benin through Agbor to Asaba.
- Across the Niger, either on the old Niger Bridge into Onitsha or on the Second Niger Bridge, which opened to traffic on 15 December 2022 and comes off at an interchange near Obosi for the Owerri road.
- The Onitsha-Owerri road through Ihiala to Owerri.
- The Owerri-Aba road into Aba.
Lagos to Aba by road usually takes 9 to 12 hours, terminal to terminal. A clean run with an early start can be done in about nine hours. Leaving Lagos late, heavy truck traffic around Ore, or slow checkpoints can push it past 12. Hours spent crawling burn fuel, which is one reason the Lagos to Aba bus price follows fuel prices so closely.
The last stretch is not the smoothest. A 16.3 km federal project on the Aba-Owerri Road, first awarded in 2019 and re-awarded in 2024, has stalled over funding, and Abia’s governor has been pressing the contractors and the Works Ministry to restart it. Expect broken patches and slow traffic as you approach the city, especially after heavy rain.
Monday Travel, Security and the Benin Stretch
The Monday sit-at-home that disrupted the South-East for years has largely ceased in Abia, but it still persists in parts of Anambra and Imo. Every Aba bus passes through both states, around Onitsha and Owerri. A Monday departure from Lagos is usually fine, but a Monday ride out of Aba towards Lagos can meet quiet roads and closed shops in Imo and Anambra, so many travellers simply leave on Tuesday.
The Benin end of the route has its own risk. In April 2026, gunmen attacked a GUO bus on the Okada stretch of the Benin road and killed the driver. That is one reason the established operators leave Lagos at dawn and try to clear Edo and Delta in daylight. Avoid any operator offering a late-afternoon eastbound departure unless it is a known overnight coach service.
Carrying Goods: Luggage Rules That Catch Traders Out
A seat ticket covers a modest personal bag, not a trader’s load. ABC’s printed conditions, for example, limit Sprinter passengers to 10 kg in small bags. Other lines are more relaxed in practice, but sacks, cartons and bales are charged at the loading bay on top of the Lagos to Aba bus price, priced by size and route.
To avoid an argument at the boot:
- Declare goods at the counter before the loader handles them, and agree the charge then.
- Ask for a written receipt or waybill that names the items and the destination terminal.
- Mark each sack with your name and phone number, and photograph it before loading.
- Keep money, phones and documents in your hand luggage, because operators generally do not accept liability for valuables in the hold.
If you are only sending stock and not travelling, the waybill desks at the bigger terminals will move it between Aba and Lagos without you, and the receiver collects with ID.
Getting Off in Aba
Aba has no single central bus station for Lagos traffic. Each company drops you at its own terminal, so note the address before you set off.
Factory Road (Peace Mass Transit)
The Peace Mass Transit Aba terminal sits opposite Aba Town Hall on Factory Road, inside the older part of the city. Kekes wait nearby for short hops.
Ikot Ekpene Road (ABC Transport)
ABC’s Aba terminal is at 2 Ikot Ekpene Road, on the road that leads east out of the city towards Akwa Ibom. It is the terminal to use if you catch ABC’s Abuja or Enugu services, or if you continue towards Ikot Ekpene and Uyo.
Once you are in town, kekes and minibuses do most of the work, because commercial motorcycles are banned in Aba. If you came to buy goods, Ariaria International Market is the big draw; it is counted among the largest markets in Nigeria, second only to Onitsha Main Market. Ahia Ohuru and Eziukwu Road markets are the other major trading points. Arrive in the evening, rest, and go to the market early the next morning, before the heat and the crowds build.
Aba sits where the roads from Port Harcourt, Owerri, Umuahia, Ikot Ekpene and Ikot Abasi meet, so onward trips are easy to arrange from the same terminals.
Flying In and Finishing by Road
Aba has no airport, so flying means landing nearby and finishing by road.
Sam Mbakwe Airport, Owerri
The closer option for most of Aba. Air Peace, United Nigeria and ValueJet fly from Lagos, and the airport sits off the Owerri-Aba Road, linked to it by a 10 km access road. That means you can head south to Aba without entering Owerri town. Compare fares in our Lagos to Owerri flight price guide.
Port Harcourt International Airport
Port Harcourt has more flights from Lagos, but the airport at Omagwa is about 72 km from Aba, roughly an hour or more by taxi. Another way in is the narrow gauge train from Port Harcourt to Aba, which the Nigerian Railway Corporation restarted in September 2025 after a locomotive fault. Check the Port Harcourt to Aba train guide for how that service works.
A one-way air ticket usually costs at least two to three times the Lagos to Aba bus price, so flying makes sense mainly when time matters more than money, or when you are not carrying goods.
