Calabar is one of the few Nigerian state capitals where you can step off a plane and be at your hotel within 20 minutes. Margaret Ekpo International Airport sits about 2 km east of the city centre, so unlike Owerri, Uyo or Port Harcourt, there is no long airport road to pay for at the end of the trip.
What you do need to plan for is the calendar. The Lagos to Calabar flight price stays fairly steady for most of the year, then climbs hard in December, when the Calabar Carnival and Christmas homecomings fall in the same few weeks. Every figure here is approximate and changes often, so check the live fare before you pay.
Three Airlines, All Leaving Before Lunch
Flights from Lagos to Calabar are a morning affair. On recent schedules, every nonstop departure leaves Lagos between about 8:00 a.m. and early afternoon, and the trip takes roughly 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes over about 586 km. There is usually no evening flight, so if you finish work in Lagos at 5:00 p.m., you fly the next morning. A useful side effect: all three airlines use MMA2 in Lagos, so the classic mistake of going to the wrong domestic building rarely happens on this route. The exception is Air Peace, which has sold Calabar seats from the Alpha hall of the old domestic terminal (the GAT) in past seasons.
ValueJet and Cross River’s Own Jets
ValueJet’s departure is usually the first of the day from Lagos. In August 2025 it signed an agreement to manage and fly the two CRJ1000 jets leased by Cally Air, the airline owned by the Cross River State Government, which is one reason the state takes a close interest in Lagos services. Ibom Air Lagos to Calabar
Ibom Air, owned by neighbouring Akwa Ibom State, usually runs one Lagos to Calabar flight a day. Its economy fares include 20 kg in the hold and a 7 kg cabin bag that fits within 56 x 45 x 25 cm. Premium Economy raises the hold allowance to 30 kg, which can be worth paying for if you are carrying Christmas gifts or a wedding outfit in a garment bag. Aero Contractors and Air Peace
Aero relaunched the route from MMA2 in December 2023 using two Boeing 737s owned by Cross River State, and it now flies to Calabar on selected days. Air Peace has sold Lagos to Calabar seats in past Christmas seasons, but its fare calendar for the route has shown long gaps. If your search turns up an Air Peace seat, compare it with the Lagos to Calabar flight price on the other airlines, but do not plan around it.
What the Lagos to Calabar Flight Price Looks Like Through the Year
For one adult in economy, booked a couple of weeks ahead outside December, expect about ₦124,000 to ₦150,000 one way and from roughly ₦248,000 return. That puts ordinary Calabar fares a little below the national picture: the National Bureau of Statistics’ fare survey has put the average domestic single-journey air fare at about ₦157,500.
Fare-tracking data from flight search sites tells a clear story about the seasons on this route. January is usually the cheapest month to fly, and December the most expensive, with average December fares running at more than double January’s.
- January: usually the cheapest month. Once the festive crowds have flown home, seats are easier to find.
- Early December: fares start to climb as the Carnival programme opens and families book Christmas travel.
- The last ten days of December: the Lagos to Calabar flight price peaks. In one Christmas season, NewsCentral reported Air Peace’s fare on the route at about ₦162,000 in mid-December, rising to ₦181,000 nearer 22 December.
Because there is only about one flight per airline per day, a single full aircraft can push the next fare bucket up quickly. If you see an acceptable Lagos to Calabar flight price for a December date, take it.
Carnival Month and the Hotel Squeeze
The Calabar Carnival is the centrepiece of the Calabar Festival, which opens on 1 December and runs through the month. The street events everyone travels for come after Christmas. In the festival’s 20th edition in 2025, the Cultural Carnival held on 26 December, the Children’s Carnival on 27 December, the Bikers’ Carnival on 28 December, and the main street parade left Millennium Park on 29 December and ran along Mary Slessor Road to the judges’ stand.
The numbers explain why the Lagos to Calabar flight price jumps in December. The Cross River State Tourism Bureau reported more than 248,000 visitors for that edition, average hotel occupancy of 72%, and occupancy above 95% between 16 and 30 December. It also said the airport handled more than 12,000 inbound passengers between November and January, about four in five of them from other Nigerian states.

Two more tips for Carnival travellers:
- Fly in by 24 or 25 December. Boxing Day departures from Lagos are crowded and rarely cheap.
- Book the return at the same time, so you are not hunting for a seat out of Calabar when most visitors are leaving after New Year.
Margaret Ekpo International Airport and the Ride Into Town
Margaret Ekpo International Airport was commissioned in 1983 by President Shehu Shagari and is named after Margaret Ekpo, the pioneering women’s rights campaigner and anti-colonial activist. Aviation charts list its operating hours as 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. local time, which, together with demand, is why you will not find a late-night flight from Lagos.
The drive to most of the city takes about 10 to 20 minutes, depending on traffic, so the transfer adds very little to the Lagos to Calabar flight price. Your options are simple:
- Bolt: the app advertises pickups at Calabar airport and shows a price before you confirm.
- Airport taxis: they wait outside arrivals; agree the fare before your bags go in.
- Hotel pickup: many hotels can arrange one, which is the easy choice during Carnival.
- Keke: the cheapest way across town, but awkward with a suitcase.

If Calabar Flights Are Full
When every Calabar seat for your date has gone, there are two realistic fallbacks.
Fly to Uyo Instead
Ibom Air flies from Lagos to Uyo two or three times a day, so there are far more seats into Akwa Ibom than into Cross River.
Victor Attah International Airport is about 24 km south-east of Uyo, and from Uyo to Calabar is roughly 85 km, about an hour and a half by road through Itu and Odukpani. Bus companies including ABC Transport run between the two cities. The fare is usually close to the Lagos to Calabar flight price, so this is about availability rather than savings. Go Lagos to Calabar by Road
Lagos to Calabar by road is about 730 km, through Benin, Onitsha, Owerri or Aba, Ikot Ekpene and Odukpani. Buses take roughly 11 to 14 hours once you add Lagos traffic, the Niger crossing and meal stops, and ABC Transport is among the operators linking Calabar with its Jibowu terminal in Lagos. You may hear about the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway. It is a planned road of about 700 km along the coast, and the Works Ministry reports sections in Lagos, Ogun, Ondo and Akwa Ibom at different stages. For years to come, the road you will actually drive is the old inland route.
