The Calabar bus is the one that leaves Jibowu while most of Lagos is still asleep. At 5:30 in the morning, ABC’s Sprinter pulls out for the far south-eastern corner of the country, and on a normal day it reaches Cross River after dark. Few scheduled bus routes out of Lagos keep you on the road longer.
That long day is still far cheaper than a plane ticket, which is why the Lagos to Calabar bus price matters to students, corps members, traders and families going home for Christmas. The figures here are approximate and change with fuel prices and season, so check the live fare with the operator before you pay.
The Trip in Numbers
- Distance: about 725 km by road.
- Time on the bus: usually 11 to 15 hours, depending on traffic and road works.
- Departure pattern: early morning only with the main lines, between about 5:30 and 6:30.
- Arrival: late afternoon at best, more often after dark.
- One-way fare: the Lagos to Calabar bus price usually runs from roughly ₦40,000 to ₦55,000, higher in December.
Lagos to Calabar Bus Price by Operator and Seat
Fares on this route come from a few companies, and the gap between them is mostly about the type of bus. ABC’s air-conditioned Sprinter sets the benchmark. Peace Mass Transit’s figures show what a non-air-conditioned seat costs on the same corridor.
| Operator and seat | Lagos boarding point | Approximate one-way fare |
|---|---|---|
| ABC Transport Sprinter (air-conditioned) | Jibowu | About ₦49,000 |
| ABC Transport Sprinter (air-conditioned) | Ajah | About ₦51,000 |
| Peace Mass Transit Standard (no air conditioning) | Western terminals, by availability | From about ₦40,000 |
| Other lines (Cross Country, GUO) | Their own Lagos terminals | Usually ₦40,000 to ₦55,000 |
The ABC figures are the fares its booking site has shown for those departures. For PMT, the company’s own fare board has listed its Standard seat from Ibadan to Calabar at ₦38,000, so a seat from Lagos sits a little above that.
In the weeks before Christmas, the Lagos to Calabar bus price rises with every other eastern fare. In one recent festive rush, an Ibadan operator was charging ₦48,000 for Calabar, against PMT’s ordinary ₦38,000. Expect a similar jump from Lagos, and expect seats to sell out first.
Which Companies Actually Reach Calabar
Many buses head east, but only a handful continue past Uyo to Calabar. Book with one that has its own Calabar terminal, so you are not left at a junction on the Itu road.
ABC Transport
ABC Transport Lagos to Calabar services are the most clearly scheduled on this route. The Jibowu Sprinter leaves at 5:30 a.m., and a second Sprinter leaves the Ajah terminal on the Lekki-Epe Expressway at about 6:00 a.m. The return service leaves Calabar at about 6:00 a.m., calls at Benin and ends at Jibowu or Amuwo-Odofin.
ABC’s ticket rules are strict. You must be at the terminal at least 30 minutes before departure, and unfilled seats can be sold to waiting passengers 10 minutes before the bus leaves. Sprinter luggage is limited to 10 kg in small bags. The ABC Transport price list has its other routes, discounts and cancellation charges.
Peace Mass Transit
PMT lists a Calabar terminal at 54 Bedwell Street, behind Watt Market, and its booking board uses a Calabar-Ettagbor stop as well. Its network into Calabar is strongest from the east and from Ibadan. Check the app for a Lagos departure on your date before you rely on it.
Cross Country
Business listings place Cross Country’s Calabar terminal opposite U. J. Esuene Stadium, with buses from there to Lagos, Abuja and Ibadan. In Lagos, its main departure point is the head office terminal on Murtala Muhammed Way, Yaba.
GIGM and GUO
GIGM has a Calabar terminal and has sold Abuja to Calabar seats from Utako and Mararaba, while GUO lists Lagos to Calabar among the routes on its own website. Neither publishes a clear Lagos to Calabar timetable that we could confirm, so use their apps to check whether a direct bus runs on your date.
Lagos to Calabar by Road, State by State
The Lagos to Calabar distance is roughly 725 km, and the bus crosses eight states after Lagos itself: Ogun, Ondo, Edo, Delta, Anambra, Imo, Abia and Akwa Ibom, before reaching Cross River. The usual path:
- The Sagamu interchange, Ijebu-Ode and Ore.
- Benin City, Agbor and Asaba.
- The Niger crossing into Anambra, then the Onitsha-Owerri road.
- Owerri, then Aba.
- East from Aba to Ikot Ekpene in Akwa Ibom.
- The Itu road through Odukpani into Calabar.
The first half of this run is the same busy eastern corridor that every Onitsha, Owerri and Aba bus uses. The difference is the last 130 km or so, east of Aba, where the bus leaves the main traffic stream. Those extra hours of fuel are one reason the Lagos to Calabar bus price sits above the fares to Owerri or Aba.
That final leg used to be the worst part of the trip. The old Calabar-Itu highway, built in the 1970s, collapsed in places, and drivers reported short trips stretching to six hours or more. It is now being rebuilt as a dual carriageway in sections. Reports from the corridor say several sections have improved substantially, but work continues on others, so expect diversions and slow single-lane stretches, especially in the rainy season.
You may also hear about the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway. Only parts of it have been built, with a section in Lagos opened temporarily for festive traffic, and it is years from carrying a bus all the way. For now, the inland route above is the only practical transport from Lagos to Calabar by road.
Corps Members Posted to Cross River
If your call-up letter says Cross River, do not buy a ticket to Calabar. The state’s permanent NYSC orientation camp is at Obubra, in central Cross River, far inland from the state capital.
ABC runs a dedicated corps member Sprinter from Lagos to the Cross River camp at 5:30 a.m., and it gives Youth Corpers a rebate on ticket prices. That avoids a night in Calabar and a second journey north the next day. It also saves money, because the Lagos to Calabar bus price plus a second fare inland to Obubra costs more than one ticket straight to camp. Carry your call-up letter and an ID card, because you may need both at the counter and at checkpoints.
Carnival Season and the Scramble for a Seat Home
Calabar’s festival season runs through December, with the Carnival’s main street events coming after Christmas. That pulls visitors in at the same time as families travel home, so the busiest outbound days from Lagos are usually from about 18 to 24 December, when the Lagos to Calabar bus price is at its peak.
The trickier part is the return. Most visitors try to leave Calabar in the first days of January, and buses fill fast. Book your Calabar to Lagos seat on the same day you book the outbound one.
Rooms disappear too. Hotel occupancy in the city has topped 95% in the last two weeks of December, so look at hotels in Calabar with prices as soon as your bus is booked.
Calabar Bus Terminals and the Last Few Kilometres
Calabar bus terminals are spread around the city rather than grouped in one park, so check which one is printed on your ticket.
ABC Transport, IBB Way
ABC’s terminal is at 75 IBB Way, a main road in the city, which makes it easy for taxis to find after dark.
Peace Mass Transit, Bedwell Street
PMT’s listed terminal is behind Watt Market, one of the city’s main markets. The area is busy by day and quieter at night, so arrange your pickup before you arrive.
Cross Country, Opposite U. J. Esuene Stadium
Cross Country’s terminal faces the stadium, a landmark every taxi driver knows.
Bolt operates in Calabar, and keke and taxi drivers wait near the terminals. If your bus arrives late, call your host or hotel from the road at Odukpani, about half an hour out, so someone is ready when you reach the terminal.
Splitting the Trip or Taking a Plane
Break the Journey in Aba or Uyo
If 15 hours on one bus is too much, ride to Aba or Uyo on the first day, sleep, and finish the next morning. PMT’s fare board has shown Aba to Calabar at about ₦10,000 and Uyo to Calabar at about ₦6,000 in a Standard bus. Our Lagos to Uyo bus price guide covers the first leg. Once you add a room for the night, splitting the trip rarely beats the Lagos to Calabar bus price on a single ticket, but it is far less tiring.
Fly to Margaret Ekpo Airport
Ibom Air, ValueJet and Aero Contractors fly from Lagos to Calabar in about 1 hour 15 minutes, all from MMA2. One-way economy fares usually start well above ₦120,000, so a seat costs about two and a half times the Lagos to Calabar bus price. The airport is only about 2 km from the city, which makes the plane hard to beat for a short visit. Compare fares and seasons in our Lagos to Calabar flight price guide.
